Repent
From Old Testament history to the present, ashes have been a sign of contrition. Although some might call them Roman Catholic, ashes are an ancient symbol in the Bible. Sackcloth and ashes were not only a sign of sorrow over sin but also a mark of faith looking for forgiveness from God. Ashes are not sacramental. They are not essential. Ashes are offered for those who find them a meaningful expression–of their sin, of their personal responsibility for their sin, of the hurtful effects of sin, and of their faith in God’s grace and forgiveness.
